Do you remember the song “It’s a small world” by Richard & Robert Sherman? As a child it was my favorite. I would sit and listen to it over and over, looking at the cover decorated so beautifully with images of children from all different cultures around the world. It spoke to me of the diversity of peoples around the world but also of our connectedness and of the things we all have in common. When Ang and I asked one another, “Why are we doing this?” our answer had to do with that song so fondly remembered from both of our childhoods. It’s about celebrating and honouring the differences between the many cultures of the world and it’s about connecting with different cultures and peoples through the beautiful cultural artifacts they produce.
Ang and I share a passion for design, travel and people. In a world where so much is mass produced and environmentally toxic, handmade tribal and ethnic textiles are unique, one off works of art which reflect the authenticity and integrity of traditional cultures and traditional ways of living and which are produced according to methods which are environmentally sustainable.
One World Textiles specializes in unique and antique handmade tribal and ethnic textiles, importing from suppliers and collectives around the globe including Central Asia, Asia, South East Asia, the Pacific, South America and Africa. These textiles are woven, sewn and embroidered by hand using natural products such as cotton, silk, wool and natural dyes. Artisans use looms, stitches and other methods that have been used for centuries and passed down through the generations. Each piece is chosen for its beauty, authenticity, originality and quality of workmanship.
One World Textiles is committed to establishing mutually beneficial and respectful relationships with suppliers and artisan collectives. We welcome approaches from artisans and suppliers as well as retail customers, trade buyers, interior decorators, visual merchandisers, stylists and photographers. In purchasing these beautiful textiles you are helping to keep alive the traditional crafts such as hand and woodblock printing, handloom weaving, and hand embroidery. These products are hand made using time honoured traditions and vegetable and organic dyes. In some instances you are also helping to support artisans and their families and communities to continue to live according to their traditional ways and keep traditional handicrafts alive. And of course you are making a beautiful, warm and rich home for yourself and your loved ones and maybe, just maybe, these unique and stunning products will remind you that;
“It’s a world of laughter
A world of tears
It’s a world of hopes
And a world of fears
There’s so much that we share
That it’s time we’re aware
It’s a small world after all
There is just one moon
And one golden sun
And a smile means
Friendship to everyone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It’s a small world after all.”
